Each year thousands of innovators, creatives and philanthropists gather in Austin, Texas, for the SXSW Festival. While the attendees come from diverse backgrounds, they are all there to learn and be inspired. This year, the Caterpillar Foundation took part in the Interactive Trade Show as the premier Social Impact exhibitor, inviting attendees to learn about Together.Stronger.™, our partners, and the work we’re doing to support our goal of empowering 50 million people to rise out of poverty by 2020.
Focusing on the need for collaboration to break the cycle of poverty, the interactive activation celebrated the Together.Stronger. platform and the work of the Foundation’s partners. As participants walked through the space, videos highlighting partners who address the issue areas of basic human needs, including water, as well as education and the environment informed attendees on the many root causes of poverty and the important work being done to find sustainable solutions.
Attendees left their mark and joined our mission by adding their photo to the hashtag mosaic. A total of 5,000 photos of attendees, partners and those impacted through Together.Stronger. came together to unveil a photo representing our philanthropic efforts.
SXSW serves another important purpose – building connections and sharing experiences. At the Equality Lounge and in a conversation with The Female Quotient’s CEO Shelley Zalis, Caterpillar vice president of Global Government and Corporate Affairs, Kathryn Karol, discussed the Foundation’s work, her personal experiences and the importance of educating girls. Kathryn discussed Caterpillar’s work to build societal infrastructure like roads and energy, while the Foundation similarly builds human infrastructure by empowering communities through education, food security, entrepreneurial skills, clean water, and more. On the importance of the Caterpillar Foundation’s partners, Kathryn said, “It takes all of us to try and find solutions to these problems – not one company, not one government, not one NGO alone.”
The week of idea-sharing, connection-making and awareness-building with the community of innovative, socially-conscious individuals at SXSW offers a powerful backdrop for reinforcing our guiding principle that together, we are stronger.
Attendees helped complete the Together.Stronger. #Mosaic.
