Automated Intelligence is Helping Us Tackle Ocean Plastic Pollution

Scientists estimate that 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans every year. Peter Kohler has spearheaded The Plastic Tide Project which involves flying drones above coastlines and oceans to pinpoint plastic waste to better target clean-up efforts. The drones rely on artificial intelligence to recognize patterns through a steady stream of photos of plastic debris. To improve accuracy, the project also relies on photos sent in from volunteers so that they do not mistake fish, seaweed, and jellyfish as plastic.
